Parafilm M tape has multiple uses because it is a wider, self-adhesive and stretchable tape. It can be used to close/seal dishes and beakers in laboratories, cover the stems of a bunch of bananas to prolong freshness, and as budding/grafting tape. This is because it is waterproof, while still being "breathable" allowing gasses to permeate it.
When used in the agriculture industry, Parafilm M is wrapped around the crown of a bunch of bananas, in order to prolong freshness. It does this by preventing mold growth and crown rot.
